Home Window Tinting in Columbus, OH
A west-facing living room that bakes every afternoon. Hardwood floors fading by the patio door. Glare on the TV you can’t fix with blinds. Home window film fixes all three without blocking your view.
Olsson Smart Shades installs house window tinting for homes in Columbus, Dublin, Upper Arlington, Westerville, Plain City, and across Central Ohio. Our team checks every window’s glass first, shows you film samples on your own windows, and handles the install, usually in a single day. We tint homes and businesses only, not cars.

Why homeowners tint
What house window tint does
Cuts heat
Ceramic film rejects most infrared heat, so sunny rooms stay cooler and your AC works less in an Ohio summer.
Stops UV fading
Blocks about 99% of UV to protect floors, furniture, rugs, and artwork.
Reduces glare
Easier on screens and eyes, without the closed-in feel of shut blinds.
Adds privacy
Frosted film blocks the view into bathrooms and entries while still letting daylight in.
Where we tint
The windows Columbus homeowners tint most
West and south-facing living rooms. These take the hardest afternoon sun in Central Ohio. Clear ceramic film keeps them comfortable without closing the shades all day.
Sliding and patio doors. Big glass, lots of heat, and floors that fade right in front of them. Ceramic film handles the heat, and clear security film can be added to help hold broken glass together.
Sunrooms and four-season rooms. Often too hot to use from June to September. Film makes them usable again without blocking the view of the yard.
Front door sidelights and transoms. Frosted or decorative film gives privacy at the entry while keeping the foyer bright.
Bathroom windows. Frosted, etched, or blackout film replaces blinds that are always closed anyway. See privacy window film.
Home offices and media rooms. Film cuts screen glare during the day. For a fully dark room, pair it with blackout media room shades.
Our films
Ceramic window film that keeps rooms bright
Most homeowners don’t want a dark or mirrored look. That’s why we lead with ceramic film. Our 70% ceramic film lets in about 69% of visible light while rejecting around 82% of infrared heat and about 99% of UV. From the street, your home looks the same.
| Film | Best for | Look |
|---|---|---|
| 70% ceramic | Heat, UV, and fading in main living areas | Close to clear glass |
| 50% ceramic | Hotter west and south windows, stronger glare | Slightly darker, still natural |
| Frosted & decorative | Bathrooms, sidelights, street-facing privacy | Etched glass, lets light in |
| Security film | Patio doors, ground-floor windows | Clear |

Tint or shades?
Window tint vs. shades: which do you need?
Film works all day with nothing to open or close, and it keeps your view. Shades give you full privacy at night and complete light control. Film can’t do either of those, and shades can’t block heat and UV while staying open.
Because we install both, we’ll tell you honestly which one solves your problem. Often the best answer is clear film on hot windows plus motorized shades or solar shades for nighttime and bedrooms.

Done right
We check your glass first
Not every film belongs on every window. Double-pane, low-E, and large panes have limits, and the wrong film can cause thermal stress. Before we recommend anything, we check your glass type, pane size, shading, and nearby heat vents, and we help you understand your window warranty.
Homeowners across Central Ohio rate us 5.0 stars on Google. A real person on our team answers when you call, and you get a written quote, not a sales pitch.
Common questions
Home window tinting questions
How much does home window tinting cost in Columbus?
Ceramic heat-control film runs about $9 to $14 per square foot installed, so a standard 3 by 5 foot window is roughly $135 to $210 and a typical sliding patio door is roughly $315 to $490. Frosted privacy film runs about $8 to $12 per square foot. These are estimates only; we confirm your price with a written quote after a free in-home visit.
Will home window tint make my rooms dark?
Not with ceramic film. Our 70% ceramic film lets in about 69% of visible light, so rooms look almost the same while most infrared heat and about 99% of UV is blocked.
Will tint make my house look mirrored from the street?
No. Ceramic film has low reflectivity, so from outside your windows still look like normal glass. Reflective films are available if you want daytime privacy, but most homeowners choose ceramic.
Does window film stop furniture and floors from fading?
It blocks about 99% of UV, the biggest cause of fading. Nothing stops fading completely, because visible light and heat also play a part, but film slows it a lot.
Is window tint safe on double-pane and low-E windows?
Often yes, but it depends on the glass type and pane size. We check every window before recommending a film, because the wrong film on some glass can cause thermal stress.
Will window film void my window warranty?
Some window makers limit warranties when film is added. We check your glass and help you understand your warranty before installing. Do-it-yourself installs are the most likely to cause problems.
How long does it take to tint a house?
Most homes are done in a single day. Larger homes, tall two-story windows, or a mix of film types can take longer, and we give you a time estimate with your quote.
Why does new window film look hazy?
Film is installed with a water solution, and small amounts of moisture take a few days to a few weeks to dry out, depending on the weather. Haze or small water pockets during that time are normal. Wait about 30 days before cleaning the film.
How do I clean tinted windows?
Use a soft cloth or squeegee with mild soapy water or an ammonia-free cleaner. Avoid abrasive pads, razor blades, and ammonia-based glass cleaners on the film side.
Can I get privacy without making my home dark?
Yes. Frosted and decorative films block views into bathrooms, front door sidelights, and street-facing windows while still letting daylight through.
Do you tint car windows?
No. We only tint homes and commercial buildings.
